Vascular Ring Abnormality
An 8 week old Weimaraner puppy called Mickey had gradually begun to vomit when he was introduced to solid food. The breeders were concerned as Mickey was losing weight. X-rays using barium were carried out to see what was happening when the pup swallowed food down. This showed an birth defect at the heart base which was preventing solid food passing down the oesophagus into the stomach. You can see the white of the barium passing down, and the yellow arrow points to the problem. We performed surgery to correct the abnormality, and within a few hours post operatively Mickey was keeping food down. The breeders have become so attached to him that they have decided to keep him and report that Mickey is now a real livewire!
A Border Terrier, Moj, presented to us having eaten rat poison the evening before unbeknown to the owner. Luckily, the owner noticed lots and lots of strange looking “blue poop” as the pellets passed through next morning and Vitamin K therapy could commence straight away. After 2-3 weeks of treatment and monitoring of the blood’s clotting ability; Moj was given the all clear and told that as a terrier, he is supposed to deal with the rats and not the poison
